Zoom screen share

Stay hidden when you share your screen

One dropdown in Zoom. Takes about a minute, and Zoom remembers it.

Using Google Meet or Microsoft Teams? Nothing to do. They already keep Nandaki out of your shared screen. This page is only for Zoom.

Why Zoom is different

Nandaki marks its window as private, and your operating system keeps private windows out of anything that captures the screen. Meet and Teams respect that mark, so they need no setup.

Zoom is the exception: it offers several capture modes, and only the ones with window filtering leave private windows out. On any other mode Zoom sends your whole display — Nandaki along with it.

How to change it

  1. 1

Update Zoom to the latest version

Older builds don't list the advanced capture modes at all. Click your profile picture in Zoom and choose Check for Updates.
  2. 2

    Open Zoom's advanced share settings

Profile picture → Settings → Share Screen → Advanced (at the bottom).
  3. 3

    Set Screen capture mode

Two entries differ by a single word. Pick the one with with:

Screen capture mode

Advanced capture with window filteringChoose this
Advanced capture without window filteringNot this

Zoom remembers this. You only need to set it again on a new computer, after reinstalling Zoom, or if an update or your workplace IT policy resets it.

Common questions

Why does Zoom need a setting changed when Meet and Teams do not?
Nandaki marks its window as private, and the operating system hides private windows from screen capture. Google Meet and Microsoft Teams capture screens in a way that respects that mark, so they need no configuration. Zoom offers several capture modes, and only the ones with window filtering leave private windows out. On any other mode Zoom sends the whole display, Nandaki included.
Where is the screen capture mode setting in Zoom?
Open Zoom, click your profile picture, then Settings. Choose Share Screen in the left sidebar, then click Advanced at the bottom. Screen capture mode is a dropdown in that Advanced section.
Which option should I choose?
Choose "Advanced capture with window filtering". Be careful not to pick "Advanced capture without window filtering" — the two entries sit next to each other and differ by one word, and the "without" option shares everything on your display.
I cannot find the option in my Zoom settings.
Update Zoom to the latest version first. Older builds do not list the advanced capture modes at all. In Zoom, click your profile picture and choose "Check for Updates", install any update, then reopen Settings and look again.
Do I have to do this every time?
No. It is a one-time change that Zoom remembers. You would only need to set it again on a new computer, after reinstalling Zoom, or if the setting is reset by an update or by your workplace IT policy.
